APOLOGETICS

A new Bible has just been published and is available in book stores everywhere. It is entitled, The Apologetics Study Bible. The word, "apologetics" is based upon the Greek word "apologia". It simply means a defense. It was a legal term used in ancient Athens in the courtroom whenever a person was accused of some crime. Following an accusation a defendant was allowed to refute the charges with a defense (apologia). That same word is used in Philippians 1:7 where the Apostle Paul speaks of defending the faith. It is also used by the Apostle Peter in his first epistle, chapter 3, verse 15.

The study of Christian Apologetics is sweeping the nation, especially since it has been successful in reaching some very influential atheists. Men like C. S. Lewis; Josh McDowell, and Lee Strobel. The first testimony in The Apologetics Study Bible was written by Lee Strobel. He became an atheist in High School, married an agnostic girl, and when she became a Christian he decided to examine the claims of the Bible with an open mind, letting evidence take him wherever it would. Two years later he became convinced that there had to be a Creator behind the universe. He concluded that it could never have happened just by chance. I highly recommend you purchase this Bible and read the article, "How Apologetics Changed My Life." by Lee Stobel. If it only convinces you, or your teen-ager, to just keep an open mind, it is well worth the price. Further more, I also recommend you send your teen-ager to our Science Camp in San Diego for a week or more. We want to help prepare your child so that he or she does not lose their faith when they enroll in college under some atheistic teacher.

In his book, The Case for Faith, Lee Strobel deals with the subject of Intelligent Design and he asks the question: "Does the evidence for an int-lligent design imply that there is an Intelligent Designer? I think of it this way. Every time I've come across written communication --- whether it's a painting on a cave wall or a novel from Amazon.com or the words "I love you" inscribed in the sand on the beach --- there has always been someone who did the writing. Even if I can't see the couple who wrote "I love you," I don't assume that the words randomly appear by chance or the movement of the waves. Someone of intelligence made that written communication. And what is encoded on the DNA inside every cell of every living creature is purely and simply written information. (I'm not saying this because I'm a writer, scientists will tell you this.) We use a 26-letter alphabet in English; in DNA, there is a four-letter chemical alphabet, whose letters combine in various sequences to form all the instructions needed to guide the functioning of the cell.

Each cell in the human body contains more information than in all 30 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica. For me, that's reason enough to believe this isn't the random product of unguided nature, but it's the unmistakable sign of an Intelligent Designer.

Do you have to give up science to believe in God? Here's what James Tour, a nanoscientist {a scientist who studies molecular biology} on the cutting edge of molecular theory, says about that:

`I stand in awe of God because of what he has done through his creation. Only a rookie who knows nothing about science would say science takes away from faith. If you really study science, it will bring you closer to God.'"

An excellent website to pull up in order to understand apologetics is: http://www.crossexamined.org. If you listen to the debate between an atheistic professor, Christopher Hitchens, who once taught at Berkley University and an apologist, Frank Turek, you will begin to understand why apologetics is so vital in helping young people hold on to their faith when they graduate from High School and go off to some liberal college that promotes atheism.

Fifty-eight minutes into Professor Hitchen's presentation he talks about our universe and how it is not only expanding, but how the stars and galaxies are gaining speed the farther they travel. He mentions that point most clearly, but he fails to tell how atheists told their students that in time the stars would slow down and eventually come back together again to create another BIG BANG and a whole new universe. Of course he wouldn't want to bring up that point because it would only prove how unscientific those atheists were for over fifty years. Instead he mentions it to try and discredit Frank Turek's argument that "intelligent design" proves the universe was created by God.

While Frank Turek believes our universe was finely tuned to support life, proving there was a Master Mind behind the creation, Christopher Hitchens believes just the opposite because 'in a few million years' he says, `another galaxy will collide with our Milky Way and we will all be toasted'. Then he goes on to ask this question, `Did a Master mind plan that?'

If it's true our earth is destined to turn to ashes, it only proves the Bible to be prophetically correct. Look at II Peter where it predicts that this old earth of ours will "melt with fervent heat." (II Peter 3:12) Thanks Professor Hitchens for giving us another reason to believe the Bible to be inspired by God. It is not only scientifically correct. It is prophetically true.

San Diego Science Camp will open its doors in June of 2010. If you are interested in more information about the dates, schedules, field trips, costs and registration forms, please e-mail me and we'll send you the latest up-dates as they become available. My address is elmdi560@yahoo.com.
